Located under a railway arch next door to Wigan North Western station, Wigan Central’s decor follows a railway theme with some inspired details such as live departure boards for the two nearby stations and signals on your table to let staff know when you want to order more beer.
Amongst the railway memorabilia, the pub also boasts an impressive range of awards for their beer and cider – including numerous CAMRA branch Pub Of The Year awards, Cider Pub Of The Year awards, SIBA North West Craft Beer Bar of the year, a Greater Manchester Pub of the Year award in 2017 and a runner up place in the National Pub Of The Year award in 2018.
Beer and cider has always been the most important part of Wigan Central’s ethos mainly supporting local brewers across their seven handpumps and eight keg lines.
During lockdown the pub is offering home delivery on all cask, keg, cider and bottles or cans with 3 pint carry outs for all draught products. They’ve also set up their own virtual pub group on Facebook to keep their regulars in touch, hosting virtual quizzes and tutored beer tastings, along with the popular ‘Beer of the Day’ review.
Hop, Twist, and a Julie
Thursday 18th February from 7pm
For Manchester Pubs Matter Festival, Wigan Central have teamed up with Wigan’s own Hophurst Brewery, Warrington’s Twisted Wheel and Liverpool’s Neptune to bring you a box of exceptional beers to accompany a night of fun.
Jo will welcome you to her virtual pub on the evening of Thursday 18th where she will be joined by Stuart Hurst, owner and head brewer at Hophurst, Twisted Wheel’s Mark Dearman and Julie O’Grady from Neptune.

It will be virtual quiz night at Central with the theme of the night being – of course – beer. There’ll be four quiz rounds including the picture round, anagrams and general beer knowledge. Answers will be submitted online. There’ll be prizes for first, second and third place. Prize bundles will include a box of beer, Pete Brown’s book Beer by Design, a bar tab at Wigan Central, brewery and festival t-shirts and more.
Between rounds, the brewers will talk you through tastings of six of the beers and tell you more about their breweries and how they’ve survived during almost a year of restrictions.
Tickets for this event are priced at £48 including twelve cans or bottles from the three breweries and your exclusive codes to attend the online event. Your box will also include all you need to join in the quiz. Delivery is included.
